2025-09-30

The name of Sulaimaniyah International Airport  officially becomes  Jalal Talabani International Airport, following an initiative by the  President Jalal Talabani Foundation.

In a statement, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Sabir, the President of the foundation, said:
"After more than four years of diligent efforts, our work has culminated in the official approval from the Iraqi Council of Ministers to change the name of Sulaimaniyah International Airport to Jalal Talabani International Airport. The late President Mam Jalal, like other great national leaders, deserves to have his name immortalized in recognition of his sacrifices and struggle. Naming the airport after him is a modest tribute to his great national legacy."
Dr. Sabir added: "The decision has been officially communicated to the Civil Aviation Authority, as well as to all relevant authorities and Iraqi airports. The remaining steps involve completing certain legal and technical procedures, after which the new name will be formally adopted."
He further noted that a special ceremony will be held once these procedures are completed, during which the airport’s name change will be formally celebrated. He emphasized that this step is "a small expression of gratitude for President Mam Jalal's journey and his great sacrifices for the people of Kurdistan and all of Iraq, and a way to ensure his name remains eternal, as nations around the world have done by honoring their leaders through naming airports and major landmarks after them."
